George Michael’s hairstyle from the days of Wham in the mid 1980’s has been said to be influenced by Princess Diana’s hairstyle of 1984 after she gave birth to Prince Harry.
The Queen & Diana, Princess of Wales, looms large over George’s career and life. Private Eye pointed out in 1984 that George’s new sculpted blond baroque haircut was the same as Diana’s, and George himself even later joked that tabloid editors sometimes mixed pictures of the two up.
But George’s relationship with Diana remains as fuzzy as ever in this book. They became friends when she asked him to perform at the World Aids Day concert in 1993.
The two grew close as he paid several visits to her at Buckingham Palace. George is quoted in the book as saying that she found him non-threatening and protective at a time when her private life was falling apart.
The singer grew distant from Diana after her famous Panorama interview in 1995, and he never saw her in person again after that.
Why they fell out remains unclear exactly, though he’s said that “certain things happened that made it clear she was very attracted to me. I knew it would have been a isastrous thing to do.”
